Advocate for Indigenous Knowledge and Child Welfare
Theresa Yetman, a proud member of the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation (NCN), has dedicated her career to social work and the preservation of Indigenous knowledge. Growing up in NCN, Theresa's deep connection to her community has been a guiding force in her professional journey.
Theresa began her social work career in child protection with the Awasis Agency during the early stages of devolution. This foundational experience laid the groundwork for her commitment to child and family welfare. After three years with the Keewatin Tribal Council, she returned to her roots, serving at the Medicine Lodge and the NCN government office. Over more than two decades, Theresa has worked closely with her nation, advocating for the well-being of children and families.
In recognition of her dedication and expertise, Theresa was honored with a three-year appointment to the board of directors of the Northern Authority for Child and Family Services, where she serves as the board chair. This role allows her to influence policy and practice on a broader scale, ensuring that the voices of her community are heard and respected.
Currently, Theresa is pursuing a PhD in Social Work at the University of Manitoba. Her research focuses on the matotsan, a sacred place where Cree knowledge is stored, learned, understood, and transferred. Through her academic work, Theresa aims to contribute to the preservation and advancement of Indigenous knowledge and practices, ensuring that this wisdom continues to thrive for future generations.
