National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

September 30, 2024

On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we come together to honour the memories of those who endured the residential school system and to recognize the deep wounds still present within our communities.

We take this moment to remember the children who never returned home, the survivors who continue to bear the weight of their experiences, and the families forever changed by the lasting impact of these institutions. The legacy of residential schools is one of pain and trauma, but it is also a reminder of the strength and resilience of First Nations peoples across this land.

As we reflect today, it's important to recognize that reconciliation is not just about looking back-it is about moving forward together. True reconciliation requires us to confront the truths of our past, to listen to the voices of survivors, and to ensure that these stories are never forgotten. It is about holding ourselves accountable for the promises we make and working toward a future where First Nations children, families, and communities are supported, respected, and empowered.

At the First Nations of Northern Manitoba Child and Family Services Authority, our work is deeply rooted in these principles. Every day, we strive to create a safe, nurturing environment for our children-one where their voices are heard, their cultures are celebrated, and their futures are bright. We believe that the path forward lies in truth, understanding, and action, and we are committed to walking this path alongside our communities.

Today, let us not only reflect but also renew our commitment to the journey of healing and reconciliation. We must continue to advocate for justice, invest in our children, and work together to build a future where First Nations voices are central to the story of Canada.

Reconciliation is not a single day or a singular act-it is a lifelong commitment. Let us honour that commitment today and every day.

- Ron Monias, CEO, First Nations of Northern Manitoba Child and Family Services Authority
