Deborah Chornoby-Sabourin's life story is a testament to her unwavering commitment to the well-being of First Nations children and families. Born and raised in the North, she proudly identifies as a non-status Cree woman. With over 30 years of experience as a Social Worker, Deborah has dedicated her career to making a positive impact in the lives of those she serves.
Married for 14 years, Deborah is a loving stepmother to one daughter. Her personal life is marked by a harmonious balance with her professional pursuits. She has become a prominent figure in the field, currently holding the position of Senior Manager of Resource Development & Northern Initiatives Manager at the First Nations Child and Family Services Authority.
Deborah's professional journey began at Mamawi Chi Itata, where she spent a decade contributing to various aspects of social work. From intake to foster care, homeless initiatives to facilitating couples and parenting groups, she honed her skills and gained a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by indigenous communities.
Subsequently, she transitioned to the Southern First Nations Child and Family Services Authority Network of Care, dedicating another decade to roles such as Alternative Care, Special Rates, Quality Assurance, and Extensions of Care. Her extensive experience allowed her to make meaningful contributions to the development and improvement of child and family services.
For the past nine years, Deborah has been an integral part of the Northern Authority, where she initially served as a contract worker. Her responsibilities have encompassed a wide range of critical areas, including Alternative Care, Case Management, Intake, and Senior Manager for the Standards Unit. As her career progressed, she assumed the role of Senior Manager for Resource Development and Northern Initiatives, showcasing her leadership capabilities and dedication to enhancing services.
In 2017, Deborah undertook a significant co-management contract with the First Nations of Northern Manitoba Child and Family Services Authority. She assumed the position of Executive Director for Island Lake Child and Family Services, demonstrating her willingness to take on challenging roles for the greater good of the communities she serves.
Beyond her professional achievements, Deborah finds joy in various hobbies. She has a passion for traveling south, nurturing vibrant flower gardens, and exploring her culinary skills through cooking. Her love for animals is evident in her affection for her five dogs, which add an extra layer of warmth to her life.
